Short biography
Stefano Marelli received his MSc in Physics from the University of Milano Bicocca in 2006 with a thesis on fast Monte-Carlo simulation of stochastic processes in particle accelerators. His research interests evolved into the field of deterministic inverse theory and its applications during his PhD (2007-2011) in the Applied and Environmental Geophysics group at ETH Zurich. Stefano's doctoral research focused on quantifying the advantages and limitations of seismic full-waveform tomography as a tool for the non-intrusive monitoring of radioactive-waste disposal sites.
After a one year postdoc at the University of Lausanne, he joined in 2012 the Chair of Risk, Safety and Uncertainty Quantification in ETH Zurich as a postdoctoral researcher on the topic of High Performance Computing applied to uncertainty quantification (UQ). Since May 2018 he is a senior scientist in the same chair, leading with Prof. Sudret the development of the Chair's general purpose UQ software, UQLab. His research focuses on high dimensional UQ problems, on the emulation of computational models and on the introduction of advanced uncertainty quantification techniques in the experimental practice. Due to his varied background, he supervises a number of multi-disciplinary collaborations with research institutions and groups outside of Civil engineering, including among others economics, astrophysics, mechanical engineering and remote sensing.
Stefano is a lecturer (Dozent) in several MSc courses in ETH and in international UQ schools, and routinely supervises MSc and PhD students from ETH.
