Department Bodies

The various bodies of the D-BAUG Department and their functions and members are described in the DownloadRules of Procedure (PDF, 356 KB).

The gender-specific pronouns used in the following descriptions are those appropriate to the current incumbents.

The Department Conference is the supreme governing body of D-BAUG. All its members are D-BAUG professors, associated professors of other departments and delegations of other lecturers, scientific staff, doctoral candidates, administrative and technical personnel and students.

The Department Executive Committee consists of the Head of Department, the Deputy and the Delegate. Department Coordinator and Study Programme Coordinator act in an advisory capacity.

The Institute Directors’ Conference consists of the Department Management, the Directors of Studies and all Heads of Institutes.

It advises the heads of department on Department Conference business (e.g. budget issues­).

The Departmental Committee consists of the Department Executive Committee, the Directors of Studies, the Department Coordinator and the Study Programme Coordinator.

The Departmental Committee considers central, primary issues, in particular concerning teaching.

The Professors’ Conference consists of all D-BAUG professors, and associated professors of other departments.

It prepares the basis for decision-making on behalf of the Department Conference and for promotions of professors for the attention of the President of ETH.

The Future Strategy Commission, acting on behalf of the Professors’ Conference, deals with issues of long-term planning and development of the Department in research and teaching, as well as in knowledge transfer to industry.

It identifies future challenges and, on the basis of that, defines the priority initiatives of D-BAUG’s areas of teaching and research.

The Doctoral Committee consists of the Head of Department and the Directors of Studies.

It is responsible for all issues relating to a doctorate, approves proposals for qualifying exams, research plans and co-examiners, and proposes candidates for the ETH Medal.

The Teaching Commission consists of all directors of studies as well as students and assistants from all degree programmes.

It takes a position on all teaching-specific issues and makes applications to the Departmental Conference, in particular regarding changes in study-programme regulations. It may undertake surveys of students and suggest improvements in the study programme.

The Grading Conference consists of all lecturers who are involved in the basic examinations and the examination blocks of the Bachelor programmes.

It carries out its tasks in accordance with the ETH Zurich Ordinance on Performance Assessments. It exercises discretionary powers over Bachelor programme examinations at D-BAUG.
