TAP goes underground
The visit to the large centrifuge in the basement of the HIF building, organized by TAP representatives Dominik Werne, Martin Huber and Ruth Kläy, inspired many colleagues in mid-May.
Ralf Herzog, technician at IGT and supervisor of the centrifuge, as well as Max Sieber, doctoral student at IGT, led us to the underground of HIF building and gave us an understanding of the history of the centrifuge. This was originally located at the Ruhr University Bochum (DE) and stood still for many years before it was reinstalled at ETH in August 2020 - after overcoming a number of structural and administrative obstacles.
Lots of numbers about size, acceleration, load, etc. not only impressed the technicians among us and made us curious how the centrifuge looks from above and from below. It's not just the dimensions of the centrifuge itself that are impressive - all technical equipment and safety devices are also worth seeing and elicited a few “ahs and ohs” from those present.
During the final aperitif, lively discussions were held and the opportunity was taken to get to know employees from other institutes and areas and to exchange ideas with one another.
