GIS and Cartography
Within the area of specialization "GIS and Cartography" the crucial subject-specific knowledge regarding spatial data will be taught, covering the areas of management, modelling, analysis, visualisation and interaction. The two chairs of Geoinformation Engineering (Prof. M. Raubal) and Cartography (Prof. L. Hurni) are responsible for this area of specialisation.
In both areas the courses are centred around two core subjects:
The lecture GIS III covers advanced topics in current GIS-architecture, geospatial databases, Geo Web Services and Web-GIS applications on both a conceptual and a technical level and relates these topics to national and international standards. The main focus of the course Mobile GIS and Location-Based Services lies on the theoretical and technical concept of mobile geographic information systems and location based services as well as providing a more detailed view on current research and development in this area.
The lecture Cartography III specifically covers basic data, workflows and technologies for the automated digital generation of static, dynamic and interactive maps. In the course Multimedia-Cartography the skills acquired in the lecture Cartography III will be deepened through the conception and development of an interactive online-atlas application of a chosen thematic area.
These core subjects are complemented by different elective courses in the areas of data analysis, interoperability and visualisation. Moreover specific applications with a direct connection to practical use and actual research will be developed in lab and field courses as single and team work projects.
Great emphasis is placed on a well-balanced mixture of advanced theoretical knowledge and the opportunity to gain practical experience in realizing and implementing projects. Actual research and development topics or industry projects are included in lectures whenever possible. Scientists at different levels are therefore working in close collaboration with the students to allow for adequate project planning, management and controlling.
A requirement for enrolment in this area of specialisation is the previous attendance of GIS and cartography courses at Bachelor level. We expect our students to be interested in the analysis of complex spatial data problems and the development of innovative geo-applications. A master’s degree in GIS and Cartography enables you to apply your knowledge and expertise in research as well as in the GIS-industry, engineering enterprises and governmental agencies.
