Kangaroo Goes Science @D-BAUG

100 schoolgirls visited ETH Zurich on the occasion of the Kangaroo Goes Science event on June 9. This year, for the first time, the event took place on the Hönggerberg Campus, where the young visitors gained deeper insight into natural and engineering sciences. D-BAUG also participated, offering hands-on activities at the Stocker lab, the laboratory for experimental research, and the Immersive Design Lab.

Kangaroo Goes Science (KGS) is an annual event organized by Darcy Molnar (D-BAUG) and Meike Akveld (D-MATH) that has been taking place since 2018, whereby the 100 top teenage girls in the 7th class from the Kangaroo Math Competition are invited to spend a day at ETH Zurich. The program includes inputs from women in STEM and visits to science and engineering labs. The girls' parents are also invited, and for them a special program is organized that includes a public tour, a presentation ("The Future is STEM!") and a Q&A session with female scientists from ETH.

The 2022 event was made possible through the dedication of many women. From D-BAUG, Caroline Palla and Sabine Schirrmacher played important roles on the coordination team, while eight students served as Götti welcoming the girls and guiding them throughout their visits to the labs.

The Stocker Lab, led by Ela Burmeister, prepared an interactive visit that focused on "The secret life of microbes", while the Immersive Design Lab, led by Daniella Griego, used virtual reality to show the girls "How we will build buildings with all senses in the future".

It was a fun event for all those who took part, and we hope that we inspired some of the teenagers to consider pursuing STEM studies in the future!
