Awards for excellent doctoral theses
Every year, outstanding doctoral theses are awarded the ETH Medal. In 2024, five young researchers from the Department of Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering received this honour. The ETH Medal was presented today by Rector Günther Dissertori at the doctoral ceremony. Congratulations!
Marc Kohler, Thesis: Effects of Earthquakes on the Mechanics of Active Landslides (Supervisor: Prof. Alexander Puzrin).
Marc Kohler now works at Fürst Laffranchi Bauingenieure GmbH as a project leader and expert for geotechnical Engineering.
Natalia Reggiani Manzo, Thesis: Seismic Behavior of Rocking Bridges Exhibiting Negative Stiffness (Supervisor: Prof. Michalis Vassiliou).
Natalia now works as a project manager at Bärtschi Partner Ingenieure AG in Zurich.
Marcel Stefko, Thesis: Applications of Bistatic Ku-Band Radar in Snow-Covered Environments (Supervisor: Prof. Irena Hajnsek).
Marcel is now a postdoc at D-BAUG, working with the European Space Agency (ESA) to develop new methods for snow monitoring using radar systems.
Silvia Vettori, Thesis: Development of Virtual Sensing Techniques for Dynamic Virtualization (Supervisor: Prof. Eleni Chatzi).
Silvia is now a Research Engineer at Siemens Digital Industries Software, where she contributes to the development of new Simcenter testing solutions for structural dynamics and environmental testing.
Xujia Zhu, Thesis: Surrogate Modeling for Stochastic Simulators Using Statistical Approaches (Supervisor: Prof. Bruno Sudret).
Xujia is now an Assistant Professor in uncertainty quantification at CentraleSupélec, Université Paris-Saclay, and is affiliated with the Laboratory of Signals and Systems.
