CAS ETH in Seismic Evaluation and Retrofitting starts successfully

There is a great need for action in the seismic retrofitting of existing structures in Switzerland. The new Certificate of Advanced Studies (CAS) in Seismic Evaluation and Retrofitting at D-BAUG, starting in September 2021, offers the most comprehensive continuing education and training in this field. The CAS Programme is addressed at engineers, architects, building owners and public authorities. Construction professionals from more than 20 Swiss companies will be participating.

Earthquakes are considered the natural hazards with the highest damage potential in Switzerland. However, the majority of existing buildings in the country has been designed prior to the introduction of the current seismic code provisions and is, therefore, seismically vulnerable.

The new CAS in Seismic Evaluation and Retrofitting (CAS ETH SER) aims to provide the fundamental knowledge and strategic thinking on the modelling, the seismic evaluation and the seismic retrofitting of existing structures to Civil Engineers working in Switzerland. Emphasis will be given on the efficient and sustainable seismic and energy retrofitting strategies, which reduce the cost and the carbon footprint of the existing retrofitting solutions. Within this frame, the programme aims to respond to the challenges of designing sustainable infrastructure and dealing with the changing environment, thus leading to the development of resilient communities.

The CAS ETH SER was developed in close collaboration with selected engineering companies located in Switzerland and the Swiss Society for Earthquake Engineering and Structural Dynamics. The programme is offered by the ETH Chair of Structural Dynamics and Earthquake Engineering and coordinated by Dr. Anastasios Tsiavos.
